At home in Drimnagh Road, Branigan could listen to the cheerful chirruping of his budgies rather than Larry’s tiresome rants. The peace and quiet of home life meant more to him now than ever before. Home offered a near-rural setting, with fresh air, gardens, pets, congenial neighbours, and the smell of baking and cooking in Elsie’s kitchen. By comparison with the troublesome youths with whom he had to deal, his three teenagers were models of good behaviour and respect for parents. Alick was now eighteen, Helen sixteen, and Declan fourteen, all well mannered and well liked by others. Branigan was immensely proud of his children and wanted each to be happy and fulfilled, to find their own way in life—as he had done.

Alick, however, suspected that his father had expectations for him to follow in his footsteps, to a career in the Garda Síochána, though this was never explicitly said. It was quite common for a son to follow his father in this way—indeed both Senan Finucane’s sons would become gardaí, and both would eventually rise to the rank of superintendent. Alick was certainly tall enough, nearing his father’s stature; but any such hopes his father may have had were dashed in Alick’s school years, when “I had trouble in class seeing the blackboard . . . and I had to get a pair of glasses.” He detected a veiled disappointment:
